According to the US Bureau of Labor, Cases involving falls, slips, trips were 219,630 in 2012.  The rate of nonfatal occupational injury and illness cases requiring days away from work to recuperate was 112 cases per 10,000 full-time workers in 2012, down from 117 in 2011, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The total number of private industry, state government, and local government cases with days away from work decreased 2 percent to 1,153,980 cases. The median days away from work--a key measure of severity of injuries and illnesses--was 9 days. This is one day more than in 2011.

The prevention of slips and falls and the creation of a safe walking surface is a necessity in the design and construction and maintenance of Wastewater treatment plants. This is also an important consideration in the manufacture of heavy equipment, machinery and trailers as well as in the design of sports and leisure equipment and vehicles. Special slip-resistant material should also be considered in and around wet areas such as showers, bath tubs, locker rooms, pools and hot tubs where barefoot traffic is present and firm-footing will help minimize slips and falls on slick surfaces.
